Message from Most Rev. Simião Purificação Fernandes

With heart filled with gratitude and joy, I would like to pen down a few words as we commemorate the Eight Centenary Celebration of the Transitus of St. Francis of Assisi. Even after eight hundred years after his holy passing from this world to eternal life, the spirit of the Francis continues to inspire the Church and humanity with the fragrance of simplicity, humility, peace, and universal brotherhood. The Transitus of Saint Francis of Assisi was not merely the end of an earthly journey; it was the fulfilment of a life totally surrendered to Christ and dedicated to humanity. His life remains a shining Gospel witness that holiness is attainable through love, poverty, prayer, and joyful service.

For me, the acronym ASSISI beautifully reflects the enduring legacy of St. Francis and the message of this centenary celebration:

A – Adoration of God; St. Francis was deeply rooted in prayer and adoration. His whole life was centred on God’s glory. Whether in solitude, amidst nature, or among people, Francis saw everything as a reflection of the Creator’s goodness. His life reminds us that true renewal begins with a heart that worships God in spirit and truth.

S – Simplicity of Life; Francis embraced poverty not as deprivation but as freedom to dedicated service. He chose a simple life so that his heart could belong entirely to Christ. In today’s materialistic world, his witness challenges us to rediscover the joy of simplicity, humility and contentment. 

S – Service to Humanity; The saint of Assisi reached out to the poor, the sick, the marginalized, and even those rejected by society. His compassionate embrace of the leper became a turning point in his conversion. True Franciscan spirituality is always expressed through loving service.

I – Instrument of Peace; The prayer associated with St. Francis continues to inspire and to echo across generations: “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.” In a world wounded by wars, violence, division, and hatred, Francis remains a prophet of reconciliation, harmony, peace and fraternity.

S – Stewardship of Creation; Long before ecological concerns became urgent, Francis recognized creation as God’s gift. He called the sun, moon, water, birds, and earth his brothers and sisters. His love for creation inspires us to care responsibly for our common home by exercising through stewardship.

I – Imitation of Christ ; Francis desired to become like Christ in thought, word, and action. His reception of the stigmata was a profound sign of his intimate union with the crucified Lord. His life invites every Christian to follow Christ with courage, joy, and total surrender. 

As we celebrate this sacred centenary, may we not merely admire St. Francis but imitate his spirit in our daily lives. May this Jubilee Handbook, which is a part of this significant celebration, become a source of inspiration, reflection, and renewal for all who journey in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi.
