The Franciscans in India & Goa
Season of Creation 2026
The Missionary Spirit of St. Francis
St. Francis of Assisi remains one of history’s most profound witnesses to the power of a life lived for Christ. Through humility, simplicity, and an radical fraternity with all people and things, he offered a path of peace in an era of conflict.
While St. Francis himself never walked the soil of India, his spirit traveled far beyond the shores of Europe. Inspired by his vision, generations of Franciscan friars carried the Gospel across continents, reaching out to diverse cultures with a message of universal brotherhood and care for the divine handiwork in creation.
From Assisi to Goa
Origins of the Franciscan Movement
Founded by St. Francis of Assisi in 1209, the Order of Friars Minor began as a small brotherhood dedicated to poverty, preaching, and peace in a changing world.
Arrival in India
Franciscan missionaries reached India's western shores as early as the 13th century, following ancient trade routes to share the message of Christ with deep respect for local cultures.
The Franciscans in Goa
By the early 16th century, the Franciscans established churches, hospitals, and schools in Goa, forming the bedrock of a faith community that prioritized service to the marginalized.
Living Franciscan Heritage Today
The legacy of those first missionaries survives in St. Anne's Parish, Ponda, where the values of St. Francis continue to guide our spiritual and community life.
